9 SEO Strategy Tips and Tricks for 2014

If you are still relying on keyword stuffing, buying links or content spamming for your SEO strategy, your methods are probably hurting your website more than helping it. As Google continues to get smarter and smarter each year, the SEO methods that produce the best results change as well. What has worked for you in the past may not work for you anymore.
This year, stop using old and outdated SEO methods that are not helping your website. Make it a new year of growth and possibilities by using these 9 SEO tips and tricks for 2014.

Reduce Excessive Ads

Excessive Ads
Including a few ads on your pages is a great way to earn affiliated money. Including too many ads on your pages is a great way to alienate your website visitors and decrease your Page Rank. Decrease the number of ads on any of your ad heavy pages and rearrange the ads so they are not more prominent than your website content. Your ads should supplement your quality content, not the other way around.

Add Request Auto-complete

People hate filling out forms, and many people will abandon shopping carts or leave website altogether rather than take time to fill out long and detailed forms asking for their personal information. Retain your site visitors and increase your sales by taking an afternoon to add request auto-complete HTML to any forms on your page. This process should not take longer than an afternoon, and it will allow people to fill out the form on your website with a single click. Not only will this benefit you in terms of sales, but it will also benefit you in terms of Page Rank as Google sees that more people are visiting and spending longer amounts of time on your site.

Optimize for Mobile

Mobile Optimized Website
While computers still surpass mobile devices as the type of device most widely used to access the internet, mobile use is growing quickly and Google know it. As a result, Google is looking to prioritize pages that are viewable on mobile devices as well as on traditional computers.
If you want your site to rank well in the future, you will need to make sure that your pages look great on any device. You can do this by using responsive web design or redirecting your visitors to separate mdot page (m.yourwebsite.com). Also, be sure to avoid flash, which is not able to be viewed from most mobile devices.

Establish Authorship & Utilize Rich Snippets

By establishing authorship, you establish yourself as a professional in your field and make your ads, which will contain your picture, more enticing to web searches. Establish authorship by linking your content to your Google+ account, uploading a head-shot of yourself and adding a byline to each page of website content.
Keep in mind that Google is reducing authorship by 10 to 15 percent, so even if you have it currently, you are at risk of losing your authorship.

Rich snippets are the little extras such as ratings and author pictures that can appear next to search engine results. While rich snippets alone will not improve your page’s Page Rank, rich snippets do increase the chance that searchers will click on your website link, which does improve your Page Rank.
In the past, Google has varied from letting only the most reputable sites use rich snippets to letting anyone use them, and Google is now looking to find a balanced middle ground. You can set them up on your page by confirming authorship of your site and including the appropriate HTML markup in your content.

Get Social

Get Social
There is much debate lately on the matter of whether or not social media shares and likes actually affect Page Rank. While Google’s own Matt Cutts did say that Google is currently unable to access much of social media websites like Facebook and Twitter, the Spearman Correlation Study offers results that are difficult to explain otherwise.
Whether or not Google can access social media websites currently, the company plans to be able to access them in the near future. Plus, social media shares and likes increase your webpage’s visibility, which is always good for Page Rank. The more you use social media for marketing, the more benefits you will undoubtedly see.

Use Google Webmaster Tools

Webmaster Tools is a free service Google provides that allows you to maintain and optimize your website like an SEO pro. You can see which search queries lead people to click on your site, make sure that your site’s keywords accurately reflect the keywords you wish to rank for and fix any crawl errors. You can submit a site map, check your page’s load time and use fetch as Google Bot to verify that Google bots can read all parts of your site or even debug hacked sites.

Do Not Buy Links, Shares or Likes

Paying for links that increase your Page Rank is a violation of Google’s Webmaster guidelines, and doing so can decrease your rank on Google’s search results. While purchasing back links, likes and shares may have worked in the past, it may end up getting your page removed from Google in the future if you are a repeated offender and Google find out. Instead of purchasing your links, focus on creating quality content that people will naturally want to share.

Remove Bad SEO Links

If you are already guilty of purchasing links, make sure you remove then promptly. If you have a penalty, start by finding out what type of penalty your site might have. Afterwards, analyze the affected pages to then contact the owners of the sites where your links are found and ask that they be removed.
After you have made a good faith effort to have your links removed, disavow any remaining links using Google’s disavow tool. This tool basically tells Google to ignore certain links to your site when determining your Page Rank.
Here is a quick overview of the steps a webmaster should take to recover from a hit by penguin or to remove a manual penalty:
Check for Applied Penalties
Check Google Webmaster Tools to see what penalty has been applied to your website. It could have any of the following:
    • No Manual Webspam – There are no actions on your website.
    • Partial Matches – Manual Action applied to specific page, section or link.
    • Site-Wide Matches – Manual Action Applied to entire site.
If your website has no manual action applied but it has suffered a significant loss in traffic, then you might be hit by Google’s Penguin algorithm. Same rules apply to both a website with a manual penalty and a site hit by penguin.
